The Cache
This was a multi-stage cache, but the 1st stage went
missing after the Parks & Rec. Department cut the grass and policed the area.
I don't feel like replacing the initial cache on a regular basis. I
have changed the listed coordinates and your GPSr should point to the main
cache. The cache is a
medium sized.
In addition to the log book, to make it fun, I have included a digital camera.
Snap a photo of yourself, the area, wildlife, whatever. I'll post the
photos in the gallery for everyone to enjoy! If you will, note in the log
book you took a photo, which number the photo was, and a short description of
the subject matter.
Morningside Park is a unique park near the heart of
downtown Knoxville. It is made of 22 acres broken up into three sections.
The first section has a Frisbee golf course. This area can be very busy.
The center section includes a play ground, a large open grassy area, and picnic
tables with shelters. The third area is a quiet section. The three
sections are linked together with a walking trail that has fitness stations.
History of the Area
The area itself has a long history. Originally,
it was part of the Mabry-Hazen Farm in the 1800's. During the Civil War,
this land was occupied by the Union Army and stripped bare of trees for
firewood.. The area had a wonderful view of the mountains and became
commonly called Mountain View
After the war, around the turn of the century, the
Mabry Farm was subdivided and houses were built. Between 1964 and 1974,
this area experienced "Urban Renewal". The "slum" housing was demolished
and replaced with 200 single family homes, Morningside Park, Knoxville Civic
Coliseum, Safety Building, and the Chamber of Commerce. Recently,
Morningside Park has been expanded, a greenway to the Waterfront completed, Alex
Haley Square Park completed, and new upscale housing built.
