******* WARNING *******
It has been brought to my attention that the final stage of this cache is in close enough proximity to a site that is on heightened alert. Therefore, reports of "suspicious behavior" are directed to Homeland Security. I want to remind everyone to make sure you carry proper identification and a copy of the cache page. If you are stopped and questioned be honest, cooperative and courteous, remember the ones stopping you are just doing their job. Please stay away from fences, even though the ground hog's hole is near the fence. The more gadgets you carry the more likely you are to be questioned, so eliminate PDAs, Cameras, and Binoculars. I will educate those in charge in the businesses of the area and also remind the local police about geocaching and locations of area caches to help reduce uncomfortable encounters. I will post updates as they arise.
Paducah, the story behind the name.
In 1795, General George Rogers Clark, the famous hero of the American Revolutionary War, laid claim to 37,000 acres at the mouth of the Tennessee River on the basis of a Virginia Treasury warrant. The same site was also claimed by the Porterfield family. This dispute delayed settlement and eventually went to the U.S. Supreme Court. When General Clark died, his claim went to his younger brother William, of Lewis and Clark fame. The deed transfer was accomplished for a mere $5. The area was added to the state when it was purchased from the Chickasaw Indians by Andrew Jackson in what was known as the Jackson Purchase and the land was granted to General William Clark. Following the Jackson Purchase the Chickasaw Indians left the area and moved to Mississippi. In 1827 Clark platted a town at the site of the village of Pekin. Clark renamed this new town in honor of his friend, Chief Paduke, a peaceful leader of a Chickasaw sub-tribe that lived and hunted in this region before the Jackson purchase. Paducah is the only major city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky with an Indian name.
The first stage of this cache will take you to a statue of Chief Paduke sculpted by American artist Lorado Taft in 1909. A twin of this statue is in a fountain in front of Union Station in Washington D.C.
The second stage of this cache will take you to the grave of Chief Paduke. In 1819 Chief Paduke, with 90 braves, were returning to the area to visit Gen. William Clark. Tragically, Paduke died of malaria along the way. The braves returned his body and buried it where his wigwam had stood along the Ohio river.
To find the second stage you will need to know how to project a waypoint with your GPS receiver. The two main things you will need to project a waypoint is the distance and the bearing. Make sure your GPS unit is set to True North.
To establish the Distance you will need to answer: the Chickasaw Indians lived and hunted in this area until what year? __ __ __ __
Date: a b c d
Distance: a . (b-c) d miles
Distance: __ . __ __ miles
For those of you that can only project to 1 decimal point just round the distance up to the nearest tenth. Remember this will place your projected waypoint about 100 feet too far. The cache is not in the river and there is no need to go down the steep riverbank.
To establish the Bearing you must locate the year that this marker/sign was made: __ __ __ __
Date: A B C D
Bearing: B C degrees
Bearing: __ __ degrees
There is new consturction going on in the area of the cache. Please use an access point on the south side Robinson's Quality Consignment(Between Robinson's and the storage Tanks. Parking Coordinates: N37 04.528 W88 35.334. I will have to talk to the new owners of the property to find out about future access to the cache location.
Remember: When projecting waypoints there is error involved and it does not take you to the exact spot of the cache. The projected waypoint will get you to the search area, therefore, do not search in terrain above the terrain rating.
