Geocache Description:

New Westminster is an interesting little place with a very interesting history. Take a stroll through one part of town and learn about some of the shadowy past of New Westminster. A straight forward offset multi-cache where each waypoint provides information to find the next one. We've included a small table to keep track of your answ

Enjoy the incredible view and secret places. No need to go way off trails or onto  private property. Respect those who have gone before you and any posted regulations. For a variety of reasons that will become apparent, this is not recommended as a night cache.

All waypoints have nearby parking, but it is a pleasant walk from the first location and should take around 45 minutes to reach the cache by foot.

All coordinates are N latitude, W longtitude based on WAAS averages on three separate days but the cache area can have very spotty GPS coverage. Do what we did - let your GPSr average out at the final cache until your reading is rock solid.

We increased the difficulty rating half a star because two of the clues might require a little pre-caching research if you are not from Vancouver.

Waypoint 1     49 13.338  122 53.892

Older cachers will remember this “burly” Canadian actor playing popular crime fighters Perry Mason and Ironside. But he also played the very sinister and  decidedly deadly Lars Thorwald in a classic Alfred Hitchcock thriller.

  • Year of sister’s death  =  ABCD
  • Year of father’s birth    =  EFGH

Waypoint 2     49 D3.3AA  122 53.FDH

Plenty of dark figures spent time drinking, fighting and stealing in a downtown  neighborhood now flooded with tourists. A statue was eventually erected in his honor, but sadly the man connected with this area laid in an unmarked grave for 100 years. When you have some time, you can see him standing today at N49 17.00  W123 06.25,  in the same part of Vancouver that perpetuates his nick name.

  • Number of letters in the first nautical occupation listed  =  J
  • Year memorial was placed   =   KMNP

Waypoint 3     49 K3.CMJ  122 P3.JMN

You may not know it, but you are standing in the middle of a place with a decidedly mixed history. Look ahead and you’ll see one perspective, look to your left for another, more sinister view. In the past, you might have spent many years gazing at this structure.

  • The third line has this year in it  = QRST
  • The smallest year on this plaque is also the largest  = UVWX

Waypoint 4     49 KA.VNW  122 PT.XGA

A beautiful place that is almost hidden from view in the shadows. Look around and enjoy the scenery before you complete the final leg of the quest.

  •  The move to the dome took place in 19YZ

Final Cache          49 DT.QWT  122 PZ.ETH

You may not know it, but as you walk towards the cache, there is also a very secret burial ground nearby. But we’ll save that location for a future Shadowy adventure!

The cache is just off the side of the trail in a camouflaged ammo box. Good luck!
