Geocache Description:

A search using compass, calculator, and some of the things that you had to ask “when are we ever going to use this?” about in school.Œ

This cache has three parts to it: sighting, computation, and hunting. In order to begin, go to the coordinates of “Useless One-Way ‘U’ Turn?” (N 35° 34.907 W 097° 35.121[further note: the coordinates given are not at all where the cache is.]). From this position, use a compass to shoot (find) the bearings (degrees from magnetic north) to the following landmarks:Putnam City North High School Performing Arts Center (large brick building with about four tiers); Nearby green wooden distance post for cyclists/walkers; United Founders Tower (octagonal black building with “crown”); The Tower (Granite and glass skyscraper on horizon; also known as "Penn Square Bank Tower") and The Lighthouse at Eastwharf All bearings should be sighted at each landmark’s highest point, and all measuremen ts should be rounded to the nearest five degrees. Next, you will need a good graphing/scientific calculator to find the next part. Find the tangent and secant of the degree measurement to the PAC (referred to hereafter as “a” and “b”), the cosine of the distance post (“c”), UFT’s cosecant (“d”), The Tower’s cosine (“e”), and the cosecant of the Lighthouse (“f”). Round all values to six decimal places. This cache is located at 35ºmn.opq N, 97ºvw.xyz., where “m” is equal to the fourth digit of “f”, “no” is equal to the first and second digits of “a,” “pq” is equal to the last two digits of “b,” “vw” equals digits three and four of “c,” “xy” is equivalent to the centi- and mili- places in “d,” and “z” is the same as the first value of “e.” If you obtain negative values for any trig functions, simply multiply by negative one before proceeding, or just ignore the negative sign. For those of you who survived the last section comes the search. With your new (hopefully correct) coordinates in hand, proceed to the ammo box whose location you have found. It should be noted that the Beggar Lice God has established his High Temple in this region, and his loyal followers seem to have made quite a pilgrimage to this place, besides the enormous amounts of high brush and other prickly things in this area. Watch your step, and know that long paints are not outside the realm of good ideas. The box has quite a nice stash of hatpins, as well as a National Order of the Arrow Conference pen and the original microcache I placed in the area before I realized that a regular would be far more appropriate. The pen and the “cache” need to stay inside the box-the OA pins and anything else, however, are fair game for trade. The CI/TO opertunities are quite excellent in this area, unfortunitely. Feel free to e-mail me for hints if you are truly stuck or simply want to check your compasswork/math/proposed final coordinates. Remember, show your work and you might receive some partial credit. A special thanks goes to every math teacher that I have ever had over the last thirteen years for giving me a desire to finally prove that I haven’t wasted all the time I spent in your classes. -Volodia
