Geocache Description:

The Hiker’s Treasure Chest is hidden by Muriel Lake and was designed for Geo-Cachers who love to hike. The hike is roughly 15 miles round trip mostly on a trail. This cache is not accessible in the winter. The cache is an ammo box with interior dimensions L 10.75” W 5.25” H 6.5”.

The Hikers Treasure Chest was designed for people who love to hike and are interested in exchanging quality back packing / hiking equipment. When hidden, the cache contained a brand new Camel Bak DayTrekker hip pack with a 45 oz.water pouch which cost 50$. The idea behind the cache was to hide a box in a great place that required a fairly long hike and had an outstanding item in it. Items need not be new but should be in working order. All of us have outdoor equipment that we will never use. Please leave items that are usable and post them on the site so people know what to expect. The Hiker’s Treasure Chest is hidden at Muriel Lake.

Leave from the parking lot at North Lake (elevation 10000) which is a short ways off highway 168 out of Bishop. Hike on the Piute Pass Trail. At the top of Piute Pass, take the unmarked trail to Muriel Lake (Elevation 11336). The Cache is hidden on the south side of the lake 15 feet SW of the coordinates submitted. Check the picture! You wouldn’t want to hike all this way and not find it! The trip is roughly 15 miles if you go out to the cache and back and can be done in a single day. You will see 4 lakes during the hike. We visited Lost Lakes, Goethe Lake and Upper Golden Trout Lake as well for a total of 20 miles with about 4 miles of cross country. (My partner Wild Turkey would like to point out that Basil Hayden left his walking stick at the top of Piute Pass on the way out and we both hiked an additional mile and half up to the pass to get it.) The hike took us 12 hours. Goethe Lake and Lost Lakes were real nice. Upper Golden Trout Lake is not really worth the extra effort. There are several geo-caches by the trail head. We were too tired to find any of them after our hike.
