This cache has been archived.

Nomex: Hi
As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm temporarily archiving this to keep it from continually showing up in search lists. Just contact us when you have the cache repaired, [RED]and assuming it still meets the guidelines[/RED], we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Don't hesitate to email me via the link on my Profile if you have any questions. [red]Please be sure to include the cache name and GC Code, or better yet, the URL of the cache page.[/red]

Thanks for your cooperation!

Geocache Description:

Located in a county park, in a well camouflaged pill bottle. One part of the Jed's Friends series of puzzle caches.

JED'S FRIENDS: RUBY

The Smith River in Northern California is the Northern-most of California's major rivers, and one of the state's few remaining un-dammed rivers. Along with being known for World Record salmon and steelhead, the Smith (named for explorer Jedediah Smith) is flooded with history.

This cache is one of five caches in a different kind of puzzle cache hidden along the Highway 199 and the Smith River canyon. Each of the five cache containers holds four puzzle pieces. You must visit each cache and copy what is written on each piece in order to solve the "puzzle" and get the coordinates to the final cache with all of the goodies. You MUST return the puzzle pieces to their individual containers so that others may find them too. Each container also holds a logbook. The caches can be done in any order but the point is to bring folks to Crescent City to visit, so the final cache is in Crescent City.

Ruby was a life-long resident of Del Norte County, and holds the distinction of being the first native daughter of these parts to graduate from the University of California. She returned here to teach and did so for over 30 years. After that she retired, spending her time writing a book on local botany.

NOTE: The difficulty rating is set at a 4 for a few reasons:

  • To find the final cache you must find all five caches in the Jed's Friends series
  • The final coordinates require an offset ->
    • The final coordinates will take you to a man-made structure. On the northern face, follow it to the East 140 feet
  • If you don't have it already, you will need to print a copy of THIS Word document and bring it with you on your hunt. Without it you will not be able to solve the puzzle!
