In addition to your GPS, make sure you have a map and compass.
Bring water, warm clothing and survival gear. Pants are a MUST for
the bushwhacking.
Getting There
From Whitehorse, head south on the Alaska Highway. Turn right
onto the Mt. Sima road. Follow this road past the ski hill right to
the end. Park here at a clearly marked trailhead.
The Route
Head up the Coal Lake Road - a rough track branching off to the
right. Follow this road for 4-5 km. At this point you'll come out
above the treeline and can start looking for a decent route to the
top of the mountain. This section could also be done with mountain
bike, ATV, or a rugged 4X4.
Now comes the arduous part. Keep your eyes peeled for a rough
ATV track on the left (thanks to Mr> Park Ranger for the info)
that leads to the base of the mountin. Or, you can do like I did
and bushwhack your way through the nasty mixture of spruce forest,
buckbrush and swamp around Golden Horn. Either way, once you reach
the base of the mountain find a decent route and scramble/claw your
way up to the summit.
You made it!
The sweeping views from the summit make the bug-infested
bushwhacking all worthwhile. The cache is located close to the
summit, at an altitude of about 1700 m (5600 ft), and should be an
easy find. It's a rubbermaid box the size of a small shoebox. This
one will be spending some long, lonely winters up here so make sure
you seal it back up well and protect it from critters and
muggles.
In addition to trade items this cache contains a small emergency
kit. Please don't take anything out of this unless you need it.
Getting back
Be careful climbing down the mountain. Once back down you can't
see the road, so make sure you can navigate back to the road.
