This is one of a pair of “Twin” Microcaches hidden near to 2 small bridges in rural Shropshire both of which span the Cound Brook. The name is derived from the material used to construct the bridges – namely Cast Iron. Both the 2 bridges were designed by Thomas Telford (after whom the 1960’s new town was named) who was appointed as County Surveyor of Public Works for Shropshire in 1787This particular bridge was constructed in 1797 by the Coalbrookdale company. Thomas Telford died on September 2, 1834 and is buried in the nave of Westminster Abbey, London The construction methods used for the bridges served to prove some of the methods used for construction of the world famous one at Coalbrookdale, built by Abraham Derby in 1790 These 2 small bridges led on to greater things, Telford’s larger constructions included The Menai Bridge linking the Welsh mainland with the Island of Anglesey when opened in 1826 it was the largest suspension bridge in the world. The Conway Castle Bridge also completed in 1826 and like the Menai Bridge was built to carry the London to Holyhead road. Telford also built the Pontcysyllte aqueduct in 1805 to carry the Llangollen cannel over the River Dee. At 120 feet high it’s the tallest aqueduct in Britain – walking over it went a long way to conquering my fear of heights (together with the Capillano suspension bridge in Vancouver) The most direct road between the 2 caches passes close by Pitchford Hall, built 1560-1570 and is one of England's finest Elizabethan half timbered houses, sadly it’s not open to the public, however a few of the estate properties are available for holiday lets including South Lodge – the old gatehouse to the hall, where Linda and I used to live when we were first married prior to moving into Shrewsbury and it becoming a holiday cottage. NOTE : There is no footpath either side of the bridge and the road can be a little bit busy so please take care, especially if you have young children or animals with you. Note Added 24/04/05 - The cache can be reached from the road - there is no need to climb over a gate or fence to reach the cache. As the cache is right beside the road it's ideal to do as part of a bike ride around the area, why not visit "Castaway At Cantlop" on you bike as well !!
