substickers: The State of NH and the City of Rochester both claim that the other is the owner of the monument with the missing plaque. Neither keeps photos of or other records of the inscriptions on historical plaques, which is a puzzlement to me. I considered simply adding an offset from the next to last stage so the final could still be found. Unfortunately, the final area has changed and the container was no longer there. I searched for a suitable place to hide it somewhere near but I wasn't comfortable with any locations in that area.

It is with regret that I am archiving this cache. Thanks to rjb for creating this fun multi and to everyone who visited.

Geocache Description:


There is only about 0.1 mile of walking involved and 5 miles of driving on this cache hunt if your calculations are correct and there is good parking at all waypoints. The cache is a mini history lesson for the city of Rochester, which I hope you’ll enjoy. All waypoints are historical monuments that will be obvious if you have done the math right. Because all waypoints are monuments, all clues are on this page and nothing is left at the sites to disrespect them. This makes the listing look long but it should be reasonable to do if you pay careful attention to the instructions. Good luck! The coordinates listed are for the first waypoint which has the word “FIRST” prominently displayed on it. There are some very interesting old stones in the nearby cemetery that are worth checking out. To find the second waypoint, use these equations: (A+B)/1000=LAT2 (C+1)/1000=LONG2 A is the last 3 digits of the date in the middle of the sign, B is the number of letters and digits in the first five lines of the plaque, and C= the date at the bottom center of the plaque. ADD LAT2 to waypoint number one’s latitude to get the latitude of the next waypoint. ADD LONG2 to waypoint number one’s longitude to get the longitude of the second waypoint. As you drive toward the next waypoint, check the monument at N43 17.616, W070 57.312 . This is the site of the Dame Homestead, built in 1758, which was the first frame house built between Dover, NH and Canada. On one side of the monument which is the second waypoint, there is an inscription that starts with “In commemoration of”. Use the following equations to find the third waypoint. (Y-1492)/1000=LAT3 (Y-1509)/1000=LONG3 Y is the year of the war mentioned in the middle of that inscription. ADD LAT3 to waypoint number two’s latitude to get the latitude of the next waypoint. ADD LONG3 to waypoint number two’s longitude to get the longitude of the third waypoint. As you drive toward the next waypoint you will pass a Walgreen Drug store. At the traffic light near the store you will see a small monument at N43 18.065, W070 58.339 marking the former site of the old court house built in 1797 that served three counties. Waypoint number three is, ironically, on Main Street. Rochester is referred to as “the province of Rochester” in this plaque. To get to waypoint number four, solve the following equations: ((D*E*F)+7)/2000=LAT4 ((D+F)*E)-8)/1000=LONG4 D and E are the days of the months D=May, E=April, at the bottom of the plaque, F is the reverend’s age. SUBTRACT LAT4 from waypoint three’s latitude to get the latitude of the fourth waypoint. ADD LONG4 to waypoint number three’s longitude to get the longitude of the fourth waypoint. There is a good parking spot at this last waypoint where you can read the sad story of this event. Use the following equations to finally find the cache (G+H+I+J+K)/1000=LAT5 (Longitude four)+.007=Longitude5 G,H,I,J,K are the five individual digits in the middle of the plaque. ADD LAT5 to waypoint four’s latitude to find the latitude of the cache. Just ADD .007 (James Bond ?) from waypoint four’s longitude to find the longitude of the cache. The cache area is wooded and reliable readings are harder to get so you may want to use the additional hint. The area behind the cache will be very slippery when wet so take care. After heavy rain or flooding conditions the cache may not be accessible although it will stay dry. Please re-hide the cache well as this is a heavily used area. Enjoy the hunt!
