Geocache Description:

The Lofty Isle has a number of links with Viking history. There was a grave mound at Lamlash thought to date from AD797 from which a shield boss was recovered. This makes it one of the earliest Viking discoveries in Scotland. The boat burial at King’s Cross Point contained boat rivets and a coin that was minted between AD837 and 854. The boat shape is easily distinguished.Lamlash played its part in the Saga of Hakon, about the battle of Largs in 1263. The Viking fleet moored in the bay before and after sailing to/from Largs where they were repelled by the Scots who were ‘innocently’ going about salvaging supplies from a stricken Viking ship. There are runes carved on the walls of the cave of St Molas thought to date from this time. There are remains of a dun here that give you a feel for the size and shape of such a dwelling at that time. How much would people have to pay today to get such a plot with fantastic views up Lamlash Bay and across to the Holy Isle? There’s also a cairn here that has had some modern ‘enhancements’ in the form of concrete! After hiding in the caves on the other side of the Island and popping back to the Irish island of Rathlin Robert the Bruce is supposed to have sailed from here, the Kings crossing point, following a signal from the mainland near Turnberry Castle to drive the old enemy from Scotland and hence secure the throne.Such a small promontory with such a great deal of history. We can now immortalise it by placing a cache here!
