Geocache Description:

A multi cache along the Manistee River from county road 612 to M72

The AuSable River has it's marathon, so why not the Manistee River? Well, this is not a marathon, it's just a nice easy float, and as long as you are here why not do a cache? This cache was patterned after Canoe Adventure, a cache near Jackson by Don and Betty, but is shorter and much easier since you will be traveling with the current of the river. The above coords are for parking near the county road 612 bridge where the trip starts. It ends at the M72 bridge/campground. You can use your own canoe/kayak or rent one at one of the two liveries on this stretch of the river (Shel-Haven on M72 or Longs just off Manistee River Road). This trip typically takes 3.5-4+ hours, but hardy, in shape geocachers (who PADDLE) can make it in less time. It took us 3.5 hours when placing this cache. There are 2 campgrounds and one public launch site along the way where you can get out and stretch your legs to take a break. However, it is almost all private property on the lower section of this trip. (the last 1.5 hours)You are looking for 10 metal discs with a single number on each. They are attached to something wooden and spaced randomly along the route. Some are in plain sight and are easily visible as you float by, and others are hidden somewhat and will require a little searching. They all can see the sun (if it is out on the day you visit) and it isn't necessary to get out of your watercraft to view them. We didn't have to when placing them. Please do not enter Private Property, as it is NOT necessary. The coords for the 10 sites are: 1) N44 45.861 W084 50.713 2) N44 45.527 W084 50.509 3) N44 45.294 W084 50.277 4) N44 44.945 W084 50.126 5) N44 44.354 W084 49.881 6) N44 43.867 W084 49.656 7) N44 42.927 W084 49.414 8) N44 42.429 W084 49.352 9) N44 41.978 W084 50.192 10)N44 41.670 W084 50.598 After collecting all 10 #s, place them in the REVERSE order that you found them. Along with N44 and W084 they will give you the latitude and longitude to the final cache. The cache is a camo-ed coffee can and is on public property. If others are present use appropriate stealth. Along with the usual goodies there is a $10 bill for the first finders and a $5 bill for the second finders. Again, PLEASE DO NOT CROSS PRIVATE PROPERTY to approach the cache. It is not necessary to do so. Riverside property owners are VERY protective, and do not look kindly on paddlers tresspassing, even if it is to find a geocache. You will need something to record the #s unless you have a great memory, extra batteries, water, snacks, and whatever else you would need for this 3.5/4 hour trip. Also, if you give us a heads up when you do this cache, we will keep an eye out for you since it is very near our "up north" place. Enjoy the water and the searches. NOTE: JULY 13, 2005 THE TAGS HAVE BEEN UPDATED. THEY ARE BIGGER AND IT IS EASIER TO SPOT THEM AND THE NUMBER, ALTHOUGH A COUPLE ARE WELL HIDDEN AND WILL REQUIRE A THOROUGH SEARCH. NOTE: SEPTEMBER 24, 2005 A White Jeep TB was placed at one of the stages by pepsiman. It is not in the final stage container. It is well hidden, but is within 3' or less of the tag. It was still there on NOVEMBER 12, 2005.
