Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden close to what used to be a branch line leading to the long gone Bickershaw Pit. The old line which no longer has any rails is now a popular walk used by locals.

Please keep to the theme of this cache and only take a badge or keyring if you are leaving one.

Recommended parking N53 30.779 W002 33.924 (to avoid crossing the marshy area encountered by previous finders).

Bickershaw is a small village which had a coal mine that closed in 1992.

Nearby in a field between Abram & Platt Bridge there is a memorial to Ludovic Berry aged 67.
Whilst shunting wagons at Bickershaw lane sidings on Monday April 30th 1945 his engine "Dolly" , 13 loaded wagons and Ludovic were swallowed by a large hole that suddenly opened up beneath the tracks. The engine was pulled backwards into the hole and could be seen some 100 feet below. It was thought that Ludovic could not have survived the accident and the hole was filled a few days later , leaving Ludovic's body within the twisted wreckage of his engine.

On the 10th of October 1932 at Bickershaw, No. 3 Pit there was an accident, resulting in the deaths of 19 miners. This was reported to have been caused when the cage was overwound at the top of the shaft resulting in the cage containing the miners plummeting hundreds of metres into the depths below.
