In The Jaws of the Serpent Traditional Cache
Doghair Duo: After the alert from Cliff Hanger we went out this morning to investigate. Yes, the cache is gone. or at least it is not where we placed it. This is the second time that this cache has disappeared so we shall, regretfully, archive it. Too bad. It was a nice cache. At least it had many appreciative visitors.

This cache is well hidden in Monhonk Preserve about 12' from a carriageway. You can park at the West Trapps Parking area off Route 44/55. There is an on season parking fee for non Preserve members; the parking lot can get quite crowded on summer/fall weekends. It is a short walk to the cache.
The rock in Mohonk is Shawangunk Conglomerate (When you find Martinsburg Shale you have probably come to a fault in the formation), an extremely hard quartzite that fractures in huge bulks and is excellent for rock climbing. The "other" trail will give you views of the rock climbers if you are there at the right time of year, as well as views of spectacular rock formations created by truely awesome tectonic forces.On your way in, if you are very observant, you will pass a rock formation to slide down! (See photos) This polished surface was created by the glacier that carved so much of this landscape 10,000 years ago, and you can see striations on the surface that were scratched by the grit in the glacier as it moved along.Please do not move any rocks; it is not necessary.
