Although the area chosen for this cache is not actually in Glen
Lethnot, it provides impressive views over it
This cache is placed close to the remains of
two hill-forts known as the Brown and White
Cathertuns. The
remains sit on two small hills on either side of a minor road, with
a small car park in between at N56 47.050 W002 44.062. The Brown
Cathertun consists of several earth banks around the summit of the
hill. The banks were made of turf laid over stone and today the
effect is a series of raised lines under the heather. The precise
date and purpose of this Cathertun remain unknown although it is
thought that the Brown Cathertun was already out of use when the
White Cathertun was constructed, most likely by the Picts in the
first centuries BC. The White Cathertun is the more impressive of
the two, with broad bands of stones surrounding the hilltop.
The cache is hidden well away from the
bands of stones and none need to be moved in order to find this
cache. (That would up the difficulty to a 5!!)
Cache is a 1litre lock n lock box
ps There is what looks like a bolt type trig point at N56 47.027
W002 44.484. This isn't on the trigpointinguk.com list so we are
unsure about exactly what it is. Any ideas ?
The cache is not suitable for buggies but is suitable for
toddlers who are good walkers.
