A windy observation Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Skippy and Pingu: This cache has gone (the TB owner has been contacted). We are replacing this cache but with a virtual cache as the area is too hard to keep a regular cache in due to the local youths. This one at least lasted substantially longer than the previous one on the hill.

Geocache Description:

On Bidston Hill close to the Observatory. A relatively easy walk on public footpaths along the top of the sandstone hill.

Bidston Hill has a number of interesting features on it with evidence of human activity dating back to Norse settlement 1000 years ago with rock carvings of a horse (N of the Observatory), a Sun goddess (NE of the Observatory) and a cat-faced Moon goddess (S of the Observatory). Three major landmarks stand on this prominent hill. There is a windmill, the oldest building on the hill, was used to grind corn into flour for 75 years until 1875. There is evidence of a windmill standing at this spot as early as 1596. The Bidston Observatory is the next oldest building on the hill, constructed in 1866 and faced with the sandstone quarried for its foundations. The youngest historical building is a lighthouse which replaces an earlier lighthouse of 1771.Park in the public car park near Tom O'Shanter Urban Farm, off Boundary Road (N53 23.755 W003 04.046)and is signposted from all around the local area. The cache is located on the public land south of the Observatory. Do not go through the gate to the Observatory as this is private.
