Just off the main road from Hersonnissos to the Lasithi Plain.
Brown signed to the Monastery of Panayia Gouverniotissa.
A beautiful Byzantine Church is here, one of the few on Crete. If
you can find the key holder, there are some lovely frescoes (in
poor repair) in the church. Osbert
Lancaster in "Sailing to Byzantium" ( publ. John Murray,
1972),recalling a WB Yeats
poem, says: Cruciform in plan, the crossing is surmounted by a
circular drum with shallow blind arcading around the windows. The
only signs of Venetian influence are a small quatrefoil window and
a pointed supporting arch over the main door. Inside are some very
good paintings, but not, alas, in very good condition.... Prob 14th
Century.
The cache is in the lane leading to the church. From the number of
visits to this cache, I am betting that the key holder to this
beautiful church is wondering what is going on! Replaced by Karin
en Con May 2007 Many thanks. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO REPLACE THE LOG
AND CONTAINER ON YOUR VISIT. NOW APPEARS TO BE NECESSARY (SEPT
08)MANY THANKS. It would be a shame if it had to be archived.
Small note on cache maintenance: Cache was left
on vacation, Greek geocacher kenezos will assist with maintenance
when he visits from the mainland. However, if a cache finder sees
the cache to be in poor condition please remove it and log "needs
archived". Thanks!
