Sortland Blues Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Makuta Teridax: Hi

While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for the cache owner and block other cachers from placing a cache in the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can’t do so forever.

Due to lack of response from the owner, this cache is now archived, so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and geocachers can once again enjoy visiting this location. Also, if it hasn’t been done already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

If the owner wants it reopened, send me an e-mail and I’ll be happy to unarchive the cache listing if it still satisfies the requirement/guidelines.

(This reviewer note is in English so non-Norwegian cache owners, geocachers and cache reviewers can understand what it says.)

Thanks for your understanding,
Makuta Teridax

Geocache Description:

Sortland Blues is a multi-stage geocache that takes you for a short walk around Sortland - "the blue city by the ocean" ("blue town" would have been more correct...).

The cache has 8 steps which should give you coordinates for the real cache location. The given coordinates for the cache are those of the local tourist office, which also happen to be one of those eight stages. They might be visited in any order, as they are within a few hundred meters from each other. You can search for the cache on foot (should take less than 60 minutes), with a bike or even in a wheelchair or a pushchair (retrieving the cache container may require you to crawl a bit, though). Public parking is readily available - look near stage no. 2, 3, 5, 6 or 8. When looking for step nos. 3 and 4, please keep clear of any ship unloading activities that occasionally takes place in this area.

Stage 1:
N 68° 41.846
E 15° 24.935

You are near a white-painted structure which formerly was part of a large building. A text inside the structure describes the former function of this object. It was used for the last time the 12th of July 19MD.

Stage 2:
N 68° 41.799
E 15° 25.026

You are now standing near a blue-painted building that has made the name of the local area a famous brand name for canned fish balls. The name of the factory is spelled out on a sign on the building. The second line of the sign (black colour) has 16 letters. Determine the alphabetic place of the first and second letters in this line (A=1, B=2 and so on). The first letter gives you the value for E, the second one for I. If you'd like to try this food, buy a can of fish balls in the nearby shopping center.

Stage 3:
N 68° 41.805
E 15° 25.178

You are near a mushroom-shaped object used to prevent boats from drifting away. It is clearly marked "KMV". How many bolts attach this object to the pavement? The number of bolts gives you the digit A.

Stage 4:
N 68° 41.756
E 15° 25.176

You are on the seaside of another blue-painted building. The roof has several sea-facing protrusions (arcs/"pointed roofs"). How many are there (include the one that looks a bit different from the others). The answer is F.

Stage 5:
N 68° 41.672
E 15° 25.180

You are near a sculpture. On a nearby wall there's a sign telling you some details about the monument, including its Norwegian and English names. The Norwegian name has N letters (one less than the English one). It dates back to 199J.

Stage 6:
N 68° 41.705
E 15° 24.916

Even power transformers get the blues here. You are standing near one that is decorated with images of birds, maps and fish. Note how the shorter walls are divided into three segments by some metal frames. How many segments are the longer walls divided into? The answer replaces both the digits C and K.

Stage 7:
N 68° 41.768
E 15° 24.733

The former Norwegian prime minister Gro Harlem Brundtland planted this tree in the year HLBB.

Stage 8:
N 68° 41.785
E 15° 24.918

You are outside the local tourist office. The north face of this building has a lot of signs, but you should look for the small black-on white one telling you the name of the square you are standing at. How many "P"s are there in this name? The answer is G.

Now it is time to find the real cache. Enter the coordinates N AB° CD.EFG and E HI° JK.LMN into your GPS receiver. You will end up near a red-painted, wooden building. The cache is hidden under the western part of the structure, near its north-western corner.

Finn det alfabetiske ordenstallet (A=1, B=2 osv.) for de to første av disse bokstavene.

ANtallet gir deg sifferet A.

Post 4:
N 68° 41.756
E 15° 25.176

Post 6:
N 68° 41.705
E 15° 24.916

Selv transformatorne er blå her i byen!
