Parking is available in the Hog Bay Trestle Park at N44:43.881
W079:48.012. The cache is along the Tay Rail Trail at Hog Bay. As
you walk the trail you will go by some of the remaining footings of
the trestle that used to be here. If you are fortunate you will see
some of the wild trumpeter swans being re-introduced. We saw three
pairs the day we placed the cache.
The coordinates at the top of this page are for a plaque in the
general vicinity of the cache that you will have to read in order
to calculate the actual coordinates of the cache. You will need
some information on the plaque.
North Calculation: Find the last two digits of the year that
the plaque was erected and subtract it from the decimal portion of
the N coordinate of the plaque. This will give you the decimal
portion of the N coordinate in N44:43.xxx
West Calculation: Take the last two digits of the year the
trestle was last used and add that to the last 3 digits of the
length of the trestle and add 100. Finally, add to the decimal
portion of the W coordinate of the plaque. This will give you the
decimal portion of the W coordinate in W079:48.yyy
The N and W coordinates you have calculated will get you there.
However, before you take off, while you are at the plaque turn to
look to the southwest and look for the ‘Hole-in-the-wall’ Its
obvious when you see it. Originally part of the trestle, all of the
traffic you see going by on the nearby highway had to pass through
that tunnel which was only one single-lane wide. To make things
worse, it was a blind entrance in both directions because it was on
a sharp bend. We can tell you from experience that there were a lot
of really close calls at that tunnel.
Notes: At times there can be snowmobiles in the winter to
watch out for, especially when getting onto the main trail from the
parking lot. A trail entrance is a few feet from the plaque. There
is poison ivy on the sides of the trail (like all forest edges in
southern Ontario) but none at the cache.
The original cache was muggled and replaced about 20m away. The
calculations above have been changed to reflect that.
