Geocache Description:

Land surveys are an important way to establish land ownership. In the 1860's valuable mining land near the 120th longitude needed to be determined whether it belonged in California. In 1872 A. W. Von Schmidt was hired to determine this line, and with some effort he established the monument you will find just to the northeast of this cache. Come to the cache for a three state adventure.

Imagine establishing latitude and longitude in 1872. Von Schmidt did it with astronomy and handheld timepieces carefully calibrated to a clock in San Francisco. Imagine our surprise to find the GPS indicating the corner well into Oregon. The legal corner is long established, and your cache is waiting just inside California in an ammo box. The posted coordinates were established by reviewing the track feature of my Magellan while I was averaging waypoints. I want you to find the cache, so if you are in the right area Von Schmidt's monument is perhaps 150 feet to the northeast, with the cache very near a benchmark. The benchmark on the Topozone link is about right in the real world. Changed the listed coordinate in 2005 to N 41 59.682 W 119 59.991, and should closely match the first finders experience. This would technically be Nevada, but that was the result of many averages. The nearby fence marks the Nevada/California line. There is a bonus logbook placed at the official tristate point, as well as a plethora of benchmarks on this plateau.
