Na de
bezetting in 1940 kozen velen voor het verzet of de spionage.
Zo ook Wim Byl, een Nederlander, die op de Rotterdamse
vlieghaven werkte.
Om zijn taak perfect uit te kunnen voeren speelde hij de verrader
en heulde samen met de vijand. Zijn voormalige baan en kennis
kwamen de Duitsers goed van pas. Wim verzamelde echter een pak
informatie en zette deze nauwkeurig op kaart. Deze informatie werd
met een goed georganiseerd netwerk overgemaakt aan de
geallieerden.
In 1943 werd hij ontmaskerd, en moest hij noodgedwongen vluchten.
Gewond dook hij onder op de befaamde boerderij van Groeneveld, ten
zuiden van Rotterdam. Daar bleef hij twee jaar ondergedoken en
hardnekkig bleef hij gedetailleerd de Duitse posities op kaart
tekenen.
Gedurende 2 ½ jaar was een radio zijn enige contact met de
geallieerden. Groot was zijn vreugde toen hij eindelijk de
verlossende codezin hoorde die de operatie Overlord
aankondigde.

et se mit en cheville avec l'ennemi. Son travail à l'aéroport et sa

Wim parvint effectivement à collecter et cartographier
beaucoup d'informations concernant les positions allemandes, et à
les faire parvenir aux alliés grâce à un réseau parfaitement
organisé.
Il fut démasqué en 1943, et dû s'enfuir. Blessé, il réussit à
prendre le maquis dans la fameuse ferme Groeneveld, au sud de
Rotterdam. Là, pendant les deux ans où il resta caché, il continua
avec opiniâtreté à cartographier les positions allemandes.
Pendant deux ans et demi, la radio fut son seul contact avec les
alliés. Aussi, ce fut avec une grande joie qu'il entendit enfin la
phrase code qui annonçait l'opération Overlord.

ENGLISH: An adventurous walk of 2 km.
After the occupation of 1940, many chose to work or spy for
the resistance. As did Wim Byl, a Dutchman working at Rotterdam
airport. To be able to fulfill his task, he was pretending to be a
traitor conspiring with the enemy. His former job and his knowledge
were of use to the Germans. However, Wim was gathering a lot of
information which he outlined in detail on maps. Via a
well-organized network, this information was handed over to the
allied forces.
He was exposed in 1943 and was forced to flee. He got injured
and went underground on the famous Groeneveld farm, south of
Rotterdam. He stayed underground for 2 years but kept on outlining
the German positions in detail.
For two and a half years, his only contact with the allied
forces was a radio. His happiness was enormous when he heard the
code sentence announcing operation Overlord.
