Geocache Description:

Explore the shoreline environment of Forteau Bay while hunting for this cache. The cache is an ice cream tub located on the headlands above (Up-and-Over…) the falls.

When coming into Forteau, follow the signs to the Overfall Brook trailhead. Park at the end of the road. The trail is well-marked, and it takes 20-30 minutes to get out to the base of the cascading falls.

After taking a few photos from the base of the falls, cross the outflow and find the trail to the hilltop on far side of the falls. Watch your step on the way up! The cache is located a short distance from the top of the falls.

Once you have found the cache, you can cross back over the stream and follow the ATV trail along the top of the bluff back towards Forteau and the trailhead. This makes for a nice loop hike and affords great views of the bay. First occupied thousands of years ago by the Maritime Archaic Indians, Forteau Bay was an important base of the French, English, and Jersey fisheries during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The original contents of the cache include: logbook, informational materials (stickers, posters, pamphlets) on safe wood-burning practices, mirror, magnifying glass, and a photo of the four boys who placed the cache.

The cache was placed by four boys who live in Forteau and worked for the Conservation Corps of Newfoundland and Labrador on a “Green Team” during the summer of 2004. The foursome began using GPS as part of their air quality monitoring work with the Quebec-Labrador Foundation (see the "QLF Community Cachers" profile for more info.)
