I named this cache in tribute to my mother (Julie) who was with me when I placed this cache. When atop the hill look at the houses near where you parked and holler “Hello Julie”. Chances are she is outside working in the garden or other outside projects that she so enjoys. Cache is a clear half-gallon container.
p>Tank Hill is so named because it is a hill that was hollowed out to make a water reservoir for the City Of Wakefield. Water is pumped into the reservoir from the old Chicago mine shaft that is located on the north side of Sunday Lake. I suggest parking at N46 28.715 W89 55.603 and walking up the new water pipline to the top. You can also drive up the road a little further to where the access road to the top is located. It is gated but you can walk up the road to the top. If you are into spelunking, take along a flashlight and check out the cave. It is located near the top along the pipeline. You can see the two large water mains coming out of the cave. Once at the top it is a nice vista with many things to see. You will have to walk around the top but looking 319 degrees along the horizon you can see the Copper Peak Ski Flying Scaffold which is 11.5 miles away. It is directly behind the house atop the distant hill. In the same direction just below in the town you can see an old mine building. Wakefield was once a booming mining community. Just behind this building in the field was the Sunday Lake Mine. The main mine shaft was in this field and was reported to be over 3000 feet deep. The mine closed in the early 1960’s. If you walk to the back of the hill and look 112 degrees you can see Wolf Mountain which is 7.8 miles away. Wolf Mountain is the highest point in Gogebic County and is the home of our first hidden cache. The back side of Tank Hill was Mount Joy ski hill which operated until the early 1970’s. Now very grown over, the ski chalet is still at the bottom of the hill and the steel structure for a chair lift that never operated is still on the right side of the slope. A tow rope was all that operated at the hill and was located along the left side of the slope. Remnants of the engine house are still visible. The tower atop the hill is an old State Police radio town. This tower is no longer in use as the State Police have gone to a new radio system and tower grid. I spent many fun hours on this hill as a kid so have fun hunting the cache. Take a lunch and your favorite beverage to rest after your hike and hunt and enjoy the view.
