Geocache Description:

Cuttyhunk Island "sailor's cache" is not just for sailors. The views are spectacular, the berry picking is great and getting there is more than half the fun.

The terrain is listed as higher because you need to take either a ferry, or your own boat. The walk itself is not that bad once on the island.

There is a new ferry service going to Cuttyhunk called the Cuttyhunk Ferry Company. The same company operates a water taxi, so getting there and back again is easier than it was aboard Alert II. As in the past, if not on a ferry, a ride on your own boat is required to get to Cuttyhunk, and, as in the past, as the log reports show, the trip is well worth it. The sea plane was not running this year.

We have made it a regular visit for our family for several years. Recommend bringing some of your own snacks and beverages. Although, the ice cream on the fish dock is quite good. The wild life is often quite calm and will even approach you. Watch out for bees near the cache, although the butter flies in July and August often flock in the area. Great berry picking on the road towards Church's Beach.

The Island of Cuttyhunk is the southernmost (and westernmost) of the Elizabeth Islands. There are very few conventional cars and trucks on the island, and most folks get about in electric golf carts. Cuttyhunk has a rather tall hill that has a WWII observation platform, from which you can see all from the Cape Cod Canal in the North, to Gay Head in the East, to Newport, Rhode Island in the West on a clear day. This is a must see when you visit the Cache.

There are also two letterboxes on the island. One near the Cache and one near Church's Beach listed as Seaside Series II.

Cache has been updated with a new ammo box and restocked and a new log placed as well.

Cache was restocked with an assortment of items you may need on your boat. However, a good assortment of crafts for the younger cachers was also added this year.

Hope you enjoy the island and the day as much as we do.
