Hiking the Backbone Trail can be a real workout. Total length will be about 70 miles when finished and the cumulative altitude gain as the trail crosses peaks and canyons will be about 13,000 feet. When its time for a lunch or snack break, you will want shade and a nice rock to sit upon. Here is a place where you can find that and a geocache.
Park at N 34 deg. 05.166 min. W118 deg 39.606 min. on Stunt Road, just before the 3.0 mile marker from Mulholland Hwy. From the trailhead on the other side of the road hike 0.21 miles to the junction with the Saddle Peak section of the Backbone Trail. Turn right and hike 0.63 mile, mostly downhill, to the cache. An alternative hike from the west would start at the trailhead where the Backbone Trail crosses Piuma Road, but that distance would be about 3 miles, with about 1,200 feet altitude gain.Absolutely no bushwhacking. The cache can be seen from the trail, on the north side. A floating butterfly. Container size is 3.25 inches in diameter and 3 inches tall.
