Geocache Description:

Operated from 1860 to 1871, Golden Gate or Gregory Toll Road was a short cut to the mining claims in Black Hawk and Central City. The toll gate was erected just west of the junction of this canyon road with CO SH 93. The supply town of Golden Gate City at the mouth of Golden Gate Canyon grew up around the toll gate. While this town no longer exists some say it is possible to see evidence of the town's main street in the spring before the grass turns green. This cache is intended to direct you to an obscure plaque at a small roadside turnout that marks the early operation of this road. While there is no longer a toll, you can still seek riches in Black Hawk and Central City via this road. However, it is currently more commonly used by residents who toil for their livelihood in Golden or Denver, or by those seeking physical and spiritual enrichment in nearby JeffCo Open Spaces Mount Galbraith and White Ranch Parks, as well as Golden Gate Canyon State Park. For a short history on the early beginnings of this road check out pp 42-43 of Robert L. Brown's Central City and Gilpin County Then and Now.The cache is a small tupperware container containing the usual assortment of knick knacks. It may be difficult to get a great gps position in this part of the canyon, but should be easy to find the cache nontheless.
