Located at Iowa Cemetery
I've driven by this very old, very small cemetery for years and never knew the name of it until I was looking at a topographic map a few months ago. Even the old long time locals I've talked to didn't know it was called Iowa Cemetery and we are all wondering why it was named that. The answer has been lost through the ages and we will probably never know for sure.
The cemetery is right in the middle of an area that German Lutherans settled, and maybe a few of them immigrated from Iowa, got homesick for Iowa, and named the cemetery. That's as good a guess as any I think.
As of 11/11/14, the cemetery has a new sign, naming it St. Paulus Cemetery, after Pope Paul I (700-767 AD). Not sure how this relates to the "Iowa" name...
The walking distance depends on where you park, but no matter where you park, it is a very short walk with level terrain and no brush. There is a mowed area and then a few yards of taller weeds.
