A Brief History Of The Bodleian Library.
The Library was the creation of Sir Thomas Bodley, a Merton scholar and diplomat for Queen Elizabeth I. The University's original library had been destroyed and dispersed in the turbulent wake of the Reformation.
After almost 50 years of grim vacancy, Bodley undertook to refit the Old Library rooms and restock it's shelves with his own extensive collection of books and manuscripts. He then enlisted the help of friends, raised loans and private subscriptions, and on November 8, 1602, the Library, now named for its chief patron and prime mover, was formally opened.
Today, the Bodleian houses more than seven million volumes spread through a variety of buildings, serving students and researchers from all over the world, which is a mighty legacy of immeasurable benefit to posterity.
