Geocache Description:

This is a easy drive up cache in an area that gets little attention. The Bacon Tunnel built in the 1940's exits next to the larger main tunnel. You can check out the fascinating history of an engineering marvel that took many years to complete and transformed much of the central part of Eastern Washington in to one of the most important agricultural areas of the country. Columbia Basin Project

You're looking for a rubbermaid container that contains an assortment of geocaching goodies. This is a wild scenic area that doesn't see too much traffic, so there's a good chance to see wildlife. Access is off the Pinto Ridge Rd. south of Coulee City or north from Ephrata. When you come to the bridge over the canal, take the gravel rd. on the east side of the canal and go north. There might be a cow gate to go through once on the gravel road, so leave it as you found it. The 3 mile gravel road is a bit rocky, but can be traveled in a passenger car. The large lake on your right as you drive in was formed several years ago from a canal leak and seems to be holding water well through out the year. The canal water flows from spring till about late Oct. when they shut it down for the winter. There are some huge fish in here, so toss a line in and hang on. I spoke with a USBR employee last Fall and once the water is shut off they allow you to put a boat in and fish the canal. He told me some take their boats inside the 2 mile plus long tunnel and go for the big ones that hang out in there. I haven't had the nerve to try this yet though. There is another close by cache called Two Tunnels, so if you want a harder challenge go for that one. There's a great view from up there. The picture on here was taken from that cache. Have fun and be watchfull of snakes and if you have a dog don't let them get near the canal further down the road where it turns to concrete. If they get in they won't be able to get out and many dogs have drowned in the canals.

Update: Oct. 1, 2007 Moved cache over about 100 ft. away from the rock wall. The road to the east of the tunnel switch backing up will take you out near Coulee City and is in decent shape for a SUV or higher clearance rig.
