Guiting Wood Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This cache is hidden in Guiting woods. The possible paths to the cache are occasionally steep and/or muddy in places - appropriate footwear advisable. Suitable for families but not for pushchairs (not even offroad types).
Guiting wood is a large area of woodland on the Cotswold plateau. Parts of the woodland are actively managed but the majority is not and some is ancient natural woodland. The woods are home to many woodland creatures as well as a wide array of woodland fauna and flora.
The cache container is a 1.6l "lock-lock" sandwich box so don't take anything too large to put in and contains the usual array of cache goodies. The box is wrapped in a green nylon stuff-sac for camouflage.
Please ensure it is sealed and well hidden when you leave it.
Follow the footpaths! You don't need to go "cross-country" through the woods as the cache is a few metres off one of the main footpaths through the wood. At no time do you need to climb any fence (or what remains of a long unmaintained fence!) nor take any of the paths quaintly marked on inscribed stone as "No Public Road Here" (we suspect they are Victorian).
Plenty of parking at N51° 55.883 W001° 52.720 from where you can do a 3 mile circular walk taking the cache in on the way. Walk NW from the parking and enter the wood to the left of the cottages. This is the most ancient part of the woodland. Follow the path to the far end where it meets the road and turn 90° left following the "Wardens Way". At the crossroads of paths turn 90° left uphill, eventually this leaves the wood by a waymark sign and skirts the edge of the wood until you reach the manor house.
Finally: There are a few trees about (No! Really?). On the day we placed the cache we had good 3D signal from 6 sats and left the GPS averaging at the site for over 10 minutes to try and ensure the reading was as accurate as possible given the tree cover. If you think the position is off please let us know.
7th Oct '04 - We've upped the difficulty level to reflect the tree cover and the hide. The lack of a hint is intentional - we want this one to require a fair old search and not just be the usual turn up vaguely in the area of the co-ords and spot the tell-tale arrangement of broken branches within 15 seconds.
