City of Salina Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Rattlingcrew: The cache is not in its little hiding spot. It would be simple enough top replace, but in a world of worthless micro caches that in my opinion have ruined the game, I am archiving my only remaining micro cache. Cool location, thanks for all the fun logs. Glen

Geocache Description:

An important piece of Kansas history, now retired to a city park. Easy access, mowed location, no poison ivy for at least 100 yards.

The container is a magnetic keyholder. You will need to bring your own writing instrument.

The City of Salina was the world's first streamlined locomotive. The Union Pacific Railroad built the City of Salina in 1934 to run from Kansas City to Salina. The location of the City of Salina is unknown.

The 477 at the cache location was moved here in 1955. The engine was built in 1901 at the Baldwin Locomotive Works. The engine is one of the 1600 series, the most powerful engines of their day. This engine was originally engine 1697. It was reconfigured into a simple two cylinder engine, renumbered 477 and sent to the plains states as mainline power.

On July 4th 1955 this engine made its final run from Junction City to Salina. Three weeks later it was moved from the roundhouse to its retirement here in Kenwood Park.

For many years the public was allowed free access to the engine. Then a tall chainlink fence was built around the engine and for many years it was not available, even hard to get a good photograph. Recently the City of Salina had a cosmetic restoration done and the engine is once again available to the public.

Coordinates were taken from the east side of the engine, near the cache location. Enjoy!

Note: On March 17, 2005 I raised the difficulty level of this cache, seems like almost everybody needs additional tips. If you would like an additional hint before you try, just drop me a line. Glen*
