Geocache Description:

In 1928, near the time when Randolph Field was being built, some developers purchased a block of land adjoining the new base on the southwest side and platted it as Airport City. They laid out commercial sites, built a water system, water tower, set aside space for parks, city hall, commercial and residential lots. The plat was approved by Bexar County on March 12 1929. It was advertised as being adjacent to the newest and largest air training center in the country. They sold lots all over the US and many were bought by people assigned to Randolph. Some lots were sold and a few streets/houses were built but the development was not a success. Two of streets are now Loop 1604. Some years ago we bought three unimproved lots from family members of the original owners. We built a place to operate the small business which we had for almost 19 years. The business was closed several years ago but the property is now serves as Hobby Shop. The cache is located at the far end of Unit 2 of Airport City and is off Charles Anderson Loop (1604) South between FM 78 and Boysville. The road is old pavement that goes to a dead-end. Don’t go into SWB maintenance facility next door or the water tower. You do not have to cross any fence to find the cache. As you get near the cache, you can see Randolph AFB sometimes called the "West Point of the Air". The tall building you see is Building 100. Because of the structures's exotic appearance, student flyers nicknamed it "The Taj Mahal" (after the exquisite site in India} soon after it's completion in 1931. With it's height and location, the building dominated Randolph Field and the surrounding countryside. It was aslo a prominent feature of several motion pictures filmed here. Building 100 was coceived by Lt. Harold Clark, stationed at Kelly AFB at the time Randolph was being planned. A San Antonio architect and son, Attlee and Robvert Ayres, converted the plans to blueprints. It's unusual 170 ft tower conceeals a 500,000 gallon water storage tank and is is still in use today. A powerful beacon atop the tower can be seen by aircraft up to fifty miles away. The building also contains a 1100 set movie theater. It now houses the command section of the 12th Flying Training Wing. The base is named in honor of Captain William M. Randolph, a WW1 avaitor who, while serving on the board to name the new base, was killed in February 1928 when his AT-4 trainer crashed on takeoff form a field near Kelly AFB. The base was dedicated in memory his on June 20, 1928.,
