Geocache Description:

Fort Elizabeth was actually built by a German-born doctor who worked for a Russian company. The vague remains of the fort are now a historical site you should visit on the SE bank of the Makaweli river mouth. The cache is well outside and away from the historical site.Coming from Lihue the fort is located makai just before the bridge across the river as you enter Waimea. Park in the parking lot, study the brief history of the fort and enter the fort on the foot path (do not climb those lava rock walls even if you are tempted – it is not allowed, aides deterioration and can hurt you). After looking around and letting your imagination run wild, leave on the footpath and fire up your GPS for the hunt. No need to climb around the bank sloping down to the river.
The cache contains a Mitzi Gaynor photo with shampoo, playing cards, refrigerator magnet, Star Trek collector cards, small shell mat, key chain, Vegas dice, quarters, batteries, crocheted (by wife) pineapple coasters with recipe card.
When you are leaving the park, turn left and cross the bridge into Waimea. Immediately after the bridge turn left to the other side of the river mouth. There you will find a lonely rock near the beach with a plaque indicating that this is the place where Captain Cook first set foot on any of the Hawaiian islands in 1778. Again, let your imagination do the rest.
