Geocache Description:

A low clearance vehicle would probably work on this. Also a 3/4 mile hike at approx 4300' elevation.

Things were different here 140 years ago. Settlers were coming into the area and taking land away from the Indians. Rather than being marched off to the reservations, the Snake Indian tribe chose to fight to the death. The U.S. Cavalry was assigned the task of chasing down these 'savages' and eliminating their threat to our civilized population.Construction of Fort Maury (named for Col. Reuben Maury) was started on May 18, 1864 at the convergence of Maury Creek and Rimrock Creek. It had 4' high stone walls surrounded by rifle pits. There were numerous springs and tall Pines all around. It was later attacked repeatedly by the Indians and found to be very vulnerable. During this period, an attack force was sent out to surprise the Snakes in Rabbit Valley. It turned out to be a bloody miscalculation. Lt. John Noble wrote "I little thought when I relieved him as Officer of the Day on the 17th instant that I would have to have his grave dug and command his funeral escort- but such is life". He was referring to Lt. Stephen Watson. His body was later buried at Fort Watson, named in his honor. Please take a moment to imagine what life was like here 140 years ago. There is some extra reading material in the cache. Unfortunately, the site is on private property so I planted this cache at a vantage point. Please respect property rights. To get there, follow Hwy 380 out of Prineville, past Post to FS road 16. Just past the Tower Point turnoff, take a left on 1670, then another left on 350. Follow this to the barricade in the road. Ignore the local's grafitti. This is Forest Service land.Enjoy.
