John Tyler 10th President (1841-1845)
The institutions under which we live, my countrymen, secure each
person in the perfect enjoyment of all his rights.- Inaugural
address, 1841
After retiring from the presidency in March 1845, John and Julia
Tyler moved to rural Chesterfield Virginia opening the areas first
“travelers’ hotel” known as the Tippecanoe Inn. The Inn served as a
stopping point for weary travelers as they awaited transportation
to distant locations. Over the past century and a half, the Inn has
had its ups and downs but John and Julia manage to keep it open in
spite of continuing rot and decay of the structure.
Having retired prior to the advent of Social Security, the
Tyler’s rely solely on income from the Tippecanoe Inn for their
support. Although the Inn can accommodate 10 or more residents, the
Tyler’s must maintain occupancy of at least 3 residents in order to
survive.
The Tyler’s anxiously await the Fall 2004 opening of the new
trail 288 that passes nearby hoping that it will result in an
increase in traveler visits and improvement of their financial
situation.
The Tyler’s have only one rule at the Inn.
Take what you may when you leave but no traveler may leave
unless another traveler is available to take his
place.
This assures that the Tyler’s will
always have the minimum number of residents to meet their financial
needs.
