Your travels
have brought you to a crossroad in
history:
You are about
to enter a very special place where remnants of early travelways
have survived.
Please help us preserve
our heritage by just looking at and not disturbing the fragile
past.
Here on
the eastern edge of the Steven's Pass Historic District, the Great
Northern Railway carved a legacy through the Cascade Mountains in
the late 1800's. The Historic District commemorates the
accomplishments of the engineers and laborers who fufilled a vision
of a railway line from St. Paul, Minneapolis to the Puget Sound.
One of the most challenging railroad construction projects ever
undertaken, the tunnels (located a few miles west), switchbacks,
railroad grades and snowsheds still remain; a quiet testimony to
people who shaped history.
Join those
before you who have traveled these byways. Perhaps you may glimpse
the fading images of those who have traveled this way before.
