I've had to move the cache and change the container as it's gone missing several times in the last couple of months. I think a few of the local youngsters discovered its hiding place.
Best place to park would be in front of St. Mary’s Church and the bus stop. N 55 18.158 W 001 47.702
The sandstone column and lion, known locally as the Lion Trough, is a memorial drinking fountain. It was erected by the villagers, to commemorate the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary.
It was originally in the centre of the village, next to the village school, just to your left as you face the lion. However due to the expansion of the village, it is now on the edge.
The water has long ceased to flow, hence the cache name. It’s now used as a flower trough.
On your way back from the lion, stop and look at the Church. Walter DE Framlington built Longframlington Church, St. Mary the Virgin, around 1190. It was originally dedicated to St. Mary and St. John the Baptist, but by the time of the Reformation in the sixteenth century, it had become a single dedication. It was a part of Felton Parish served by a curate, but in 1891 in was created into a parish church.
One of the finest features of the church is the Norman chancel arch, with three detached pillars on each side. Due to similarities in the features, it is believed that the builders of this church were also responsible for Brinkburn Priory situated two miles away in the loop of the Coquet.
Walk over to the village green, again dedicated to King George V. go through the new millennium gates and on to the Tank Turn. During WW2 tanks were parked on the village green and the block circle was built to stop them digging up the field too much.
On the front of the bus shelter there is a large map of walks, in and around the village. Some just short walks, others a bit further, but if you really feel energetic you could walk all the way to Canada
YOU WILL NEED TO BE VERY DISCREET WHEN REMOVING THE CACHE IT IS IN A VERY BUSY PLACE HENCE THE 3* FOR DIFFICULTY PLEASE REPLACE CAREFULLY
