Police Academy 2

In western North Carolina, we have the Larry T. Justus Western Justice Academy. It's where our law enforcement officers come from the western half of North Carolina, to receive advanced and continuing training on the latest crime fighting techniques.

A local law enforcement officer was recently talking with another local geocacher, and mentioned to him that they were being taught the use of a hand-held GPS receiver in the course of their training. They had to go out and "find" a waypoint that the instructors had taken earlier. When the INSTRUCTORS discovered something called "Geocaching," they started using some of our local caches as "targets" for their trainees to find. What a concept! Atrus and I have had our "eyes" on the Police Academy for a while as a possible location to hide a cache or three, and this was all we needed to bring that idea into focus. We contacted and met with the man in charge of running the academy, and he was very receptive to the idea of us hiding a few caches on academy property. However, there were a few strict guidelines:

He came out into the parking lot with me and said that for security reasons, most of the campus was

OFF LIMITS!!!

There are only two places on campus that are always open and accessible to the public. We have been given permission to conduct our activities in those locations ONLY. Please restrict your presence to these two areas, or you may encounter campus security. ("Bad Boys, Bad Boys! Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?")
  1. The parking lot that is accessed from St. Paul's Rd. is always open to the public. Use ONLY that parking lot.

  2. The athletic field is always open to the public, and available for our use as well.

This is the second of two caches we have hidden on campus property. You will be looking for a round, plastic container, which is camouflaged and hidden out of casual sight. (Note: Be cautious of poison ivy in season!) It contains small, exchangeable items and a log. Please rehide it as well as you found it. The cache does not contain a pencil, so, you need to bring your own.Bring Your Own Pencil!
In recognition of the number of geocaches they have hidden, Atrus & I would like to acknowledge the "public service" that NC_Ron&Dianne are doing, not only for the geocaching community, but also, for the Larry T. Justus Western Justice Academy by providing MORE than an ample supply of "bogies" for them to find in their law enforcement training! Thank you, Ron & Dianne! Great! (applause)

Final update: On February 18, 2008, we stopped by again, to speak with the Deputy Director of the Justus Academy. He advised us that he brought up the topic of geocaching at their last Director's meeting, and learned that there are folks at the East Campus who also wanted to place caches there. After discussing the pros & cons, the Chief Director thought it best, at this time, for security reasons, to not allow geocaches on any of their campuses.

We regret that we must now archive these caches. They were fun while they lasted. We thank everyone who came out to find them.
