Plane crash site on the southerly face of Bald Mountain, Ellsworth, ME. The site is about 1/2 mile from end of new road, up a trial with a moderate climb
Capt. Vernal Johnson and Lt. Edward Masaltis of the 75th Fighter Squadron crashed their F-101B Voodoo on April 11, 1961. Site includes plane and memorial. Access to site from end of new subdivision off Winkumpaugh Road(off 1A between Ellsworth and Bangor). GPS coord. are at the crash site and memorial, the plane itself is south of memorial down a trail about 1000'. Subdivision is just after road surface change to gravel at bend in road. Cache is a standard size Tubberware container with logbook, camera(please enter photo# in logbook with description and date), small toys and trinkets. Enjoy the view of Branch Lake and Cadillac Mountain.
