Geocache Description:

Here it is, the long awaited (by me, at least) second cache in my “Nile” series. I’ve searched long and hard from Binghamton to Seneca Lake and finally up here in Rochester for a place worthy of being called Catacombs. Who would have guessed I’d finally find it on the campus of RIT? The cache is hidden in a magnetic car key holder.

This cache cannot be found during RIT's Christmas break (December 19-January 2). That is the only time the tunnels are closed.

This will hopefully be a cache that you won’t soon forget. The given coordinates will take you to the entrance of Grace Watson Hall. Look for the only set of stairs leading downwards (they’re on the east side of the building, kind of near an ATM and are very obvious) and follow them. Once you get there it’s time to put away your GPS and take out your camera. From here on out you’ll have to use clues to traverse a network of underground tunnels that connect all the dorms together. Much like ancient Egyptian pyramids, the hallways are covered with all manner of “hieroglyphs”, left by students of the past. Some date back to 1979, and it's possible there are some even older. This is one of the most interesting parts of campus, in my opinion.

RIT is an open campus, meaning that anyone can explore these tunnels as they wish. However, parking isn’t quite as open. Visitors can park in the back of U lot (N43°04.909' W77°40.450') without fear of getting a ticket. You can cut through part of the Wildflower Trail to reach Grace Watson Hall from here. Anyone with more guts can park in C lot (N43°05.010' W77°40.048'), which is much closer to Grace Watson Hall, but you’ll face the risk of getting a ticket. If you want to take the chance it’s up to you.

These clues are not cryptic and pretty straight foreword. All you’ll need to do is examine the “hieroglyphs”. The clues will lead you through the tunnels, never leaving the main hallway, on a tour of some pretty interesting sights. Print these instructions out and bring them with you.

  1. From the bottom of the stairs walk forward and examine the map of the tunnels, if you so wish, before heading down the hallway to your right.
  2. Once you see Ziggy turn the only way you can. Keep in mind that you won’t be leaving the tunnels. Follow the hallway until you’ve reached The Hobbit.
  3. Take a right. Say hello to Wolverine and make another turn down the hallway with a Mr. Peanut wannabe in it. He wont take long to spot.
  4. When the hallway ends turn right, passing the Outing Club and eventually coming upon Zoso. Turn left here.
  5. You’re almost there! Walk straight past a space shuttle until you can’t go straight anymore. Follow the only available hallway, past The Simpsons and some planes. Once you see a sphinx, a fitting end to this adventure, you are within mere feet of the cache.
