This is a nice walk or bike ride on a fairly isolated section of the Mon River Trail.
This cache is located along the Mon River Rail Trail, so there are many points of access. If you are walking, the closest parking area is Opekiska. To get there, take the Goshen Road exit off I-79 and turn south on Rt. 73. Take a right on Opekiska Road, and follow it to the parking area at N39 33.824 W080 03.002.The walk to the cache is about 2.3 miles from the parking area. The path follows the river around a big curve, so your GPSr will point you to a more direct route after a half mile or so and you may be tempted to set off cross-country. This is not recommended, as it's very rough country through private land. The cache is less than 100 feet from the trail. As you make your way to the cache, you'll pass the remnants of the town of Beechwood. This community was established in the early to mid-1800's and had the first commercial coal mine operation in Monongalia County. The coal mine opened in 1886, just after the completion of the railroad linking Morgantown and Fairmont. A post office was established in 1889.At N39 34.889, W080 02.926 you can see the ruins of the eighteen coke ovens that were associated with the mine. At N39 34.624, W080 02.514 is the Carter Cemetary. The ruins of some of the houses of the community may be glimpsed through the trees. This is my first cache, I hope you enjoy it.
