Geocache Description:

WARNING!!!

The trails on Round Top Mountain, closed for several years and unmaintained,
are open again and have been cleared. There are even new trail signs, but
I still advise you to study the trail map located on the sign at the trailhead before starting your hike.

However, if you wish to hike there, you may do so but AT YOUR OWN RISK
and your acceptance of your full responsibility for any injuries
or mishaps which may occur while you are on the mountain.

On the cold and foggy night of February 6, 1948, a B-25 bomber crashed into the side of Round Top Mountain, killing all five of its military passengers. The crash site has been marked with a memorial honoring those men. Some small debris near the plaque and an engine near the parking lot for the Round Top Mountain Trail remain as a reminder of that tragic event.

This cache was hidden on Sept. 11, 2004, and is placed in honor of those killed at this site in 1948, those killed in the terrorist attacks on this date in 2001, and those from the U.S. and its allies that have died in the War on Terror that has been waged since 9-11-01.

According to Tennessee Geocacher, the approver for Arkansas geocaches, this is the 1000th cache placed in Arkansas. The cache, a regular-sized container, is accessed by the Round Top Mountain Trail, just off Scenic Rt. 7, south of Jasper, AR. This scenic trail has to be one of the best-kept secrets in Arkansas. Take time to hike the whole trail and enjoy its many wonders. Also, be sure to catch the nearby Round Mountain cache (GC3D14), located on another part of the trail.

The posted coordinates are based upon the average of several readings. However, a nearby bluff and the foliage cover may have significantly affected the accuracy of these readings. If you think they need adjustment, please send me an email with the suggested coordinates.

Round Top Mountain is owned by the Newton County Resource Council, which has provided permission for the placement of this cache.
