October 16th Great Kinzua Bear Hunt Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

kcepenn: I emailed Team Arriver to log the bugs out some time ago, but have not gotten any response, so it may be a lost cause. I am archiving the cache, but if anyone has the bugs and wants to log them out, email me and I will try to reactivate the cache to allow the bugs to be logged out. I enjoyed the bear hunt and meeting all of you at the event. We hope to see you again along the trail somewhere.

Geocache Description:

The Kinzua Area Cachers present “THE GREAT KINZUA BEAR HUNT” and a whole lot of fun on October 16th. Come join us for this Geomeet and enjoy the quest for some really unique bears while enjoying the fall foliage and festivities in Warren County.

There have been a rash of bear sightings in Kinzua Country, and we want your help in bagging them! You might actually see a real one during your caching experience in Warren County, but the ones we will be looking for during this event are a bit different. These bears are a more urbane species with a certain artistic flair. These bears are lifesize statues of bears that were sponsored by various businesses and organizations to educate and promote the youth of Warren County. The partners for Healthy Communities-Healthy Youth (HCHY) of Warren County are excited to present “A Bear Affair” and participate in this geomeet . We hope you come and enjoy the wonderful creativity of our local adult and youth artists as they have combined their talents to produce some of the zaniest ursine characters ever to emerge from hibernation.

Through this program, over 100 buisnesses and organizations took the time to learn about the 40 assets that all youth need to be healthy, caring, and responsible citizens. As part of their commitment, they sponsored a bear statue and their particular group dressed, decorated, or designed their own character. They are truly unique and entertaining to behold. Bring your camera as you will wish you had it to record these bear sightings for your friends.

The event begins at 11:00 A.M. at the coordinates posted above. These are the coordinates for the entrance to the Northern Allegheny Vacation Region Welcome Center. The Welcome Center does not open until 11:00 A.M. so if you are early try for a local cache or two. There are several close by and several new caches have been hidden but will not be posted on the geocaching.com website until the day of this event.

Between 11:00 A.M. and 12:30 P.M. you can check in at the Welcome Center and learn about the area and you will be furnished an extensive list of GPS coordinates for recent sightings of these bears and instructions. Your assignment will be to track down a certain number of these bear characters and verify the name of the bear that was seen at the given coordinates. There are over 50 bears available to confirm a sighting on, and they will each be worth points in the Great Kinzua Bear Hunt.

Participants will have about 3 hours to spend hunting bears (depending on what time you start)or searching for local caches at your own preference, but you must identify the required number of bears and turn in your sighting confirmation report at Pavilion #4 at Chapman Dam State Park by 3:00 p.m. to be eligible for prizes. Each bear will be assigned a random number of points by the HCHY Partnership and the highest total points for the required number of bears identified will determine winners of prizes.

Geo-Bear hunters will eventually wind up at Pavilion #4 in Chapman Dam State Park, near the town of Clarendon where you will turn in your bear hunting report for scoring . While the scoring is being done, you can search for a special souvenir cache in the park placed just for this one day event or socialize and meet other participants. There will also be a Travel Bug Exchange Table. Whatever number of TB's you sign in to the event cache, you can sign out before you leave.

A picnic supper will begin at 4:00 p.m. with a hotdog and hamburger cookout. Meat and condiments will be provided by the Kinzua Area Cachers for a $1.00 per person or a maximum of $3.00 per family donation. Participants are asked to bring something like hot dog and hamburger buns, non-alcoholic beverages, chips, salads, side dishes, or desserts to share with the group. There is electricity at the pavilion for crockpots or coffee pots. The pavilion will accommodate up to 150 people.

Chapman Dam State Park is a great place for this event and offers a great deal of recreation possibilities. They do have camping sites available both with and without electricity if you want to stay for the weekend. Campsites can be reserved by phone by calling 1-888- 727-2757. They do not allow pets or alcoholic beverages in the park.

Please post a note on this page if you plan on coming to help us determine how much meat we need to provide and how many souvenirs we need. You could also post what you plan to provide for the picnic to help us determine any unmet needs.

We hope participants will come from near, far, and wide to join us in “The Great Kinzua Bear Hunt. Be on the lookout for bears on your way to the event, it might save you some backtracking, but a word of advice is in order. If you see one that is all black, moving around, with sharp claws, and has big teeth, he is probably not one of our celebrity bears, so don’t try to feed him! Happy hunting!
