Geocache Description:

I grew up in Akron--the Rubber Capital of the World--so many of the sites have happy memories for me. Even though the rubber industry is no longer here, many places are of historical interest. Enjoy them as you search.

This is one of my favorite sites! I see it often and am always amazed. This building (called the Air Dock) is 22 stories tall. Condensation clouds can occur at the top, which may drip and "rain" on people! Seven football games can be played at the same time inside it, complete with cheering fans, or it will house 2 of the famous blimps at the same time. It was completed in 1929 and has had some famous visitors including Amelia Earhart, John Glenn and Lou Hoover (wife of the 31st President). It is shaped to prevent wind resistance; the doors on the ends weigh 1200 tons per end and open on railroad tracks driven by motors in the sheds outside to prevent sparks from damaging things inside. It takes 5 minutes to open an end. The coordinates will take you to a parking lot off Exeter St. near the base of the Air Dock. This is a business area, so it may be congested during working hours. Please be respectful of security, etc.Step 1. Count the white "windows" on one side of the Air Dock. Multipy by 23, then add 4. Subtract the last 3 digits, so that the new coordinates are N41 02._ _ _ . The new west coordinates are W081 27.725.Step 2. The Rubber Bowl now belongs to the Univerity of Akron and is the site of their football games during the season. Beside it is the world famous Derby Downs where my brother raced his derby car and where the International Soap Box Derby is held each summer. The coordinates will take you to a small parking area with a view of both. What is written in white letters over the main gate of the Rubber Bowl? If each letter of the alphabet is given a number-- A is 1, B is 2, etc. what number is the last letter on the sign? Add it to the north coordinates, making the new one N41 02._ _ _. Count the letters in the second word and add that to the west coordinates, making it W081 27 _ _ _. Step 3. The cache is a small ammo box.
