History: Gold was discovered near here in 1855, but it took until 1865 for a state geologist to value a gold speciment from Lake Vermilion at $23 a metric ton. A letter in 1885 in the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported,"...the eye beholds bright veins of quartz, lavishly enriched with gold." Value was placed at $165 per metric ton.In the winter of 1865-66 many gold companies were formed in St. Paul. Trainloads of supplies and machinery went to Duluth where they were transferred to wagons and hauled to Lake Vermilion on the new road which had been hacked out of the wilderness.New found ore samples were sent for assay and the report came back that gold (Au) was absent. By the end of summer (1866) prospectors realized that fool's gold (FeS2) was abundant and no one had actually seen gold (Au).Throughout the ensuing years, including 2004, there have been new reports of gold finds in the area.
