Geocache Description:

This is the third of my archaeology themed caches but this time the site is much more ancient and rather more mysterious than the others.

The cache site is based around Stockton stone - one of the few ancient standing stones in East Anglia and, I understand the only one marked on the OS map. As stone is rare in this region it is likely that stones such as this were left behind by retreating glaciers in the last ice age and their rarity made them objects or places of worship in the Bronze Age. Although none are of Stonehenge type proportions there are a number of other standing stones in the Waveney area including Beccles, Pakefield, Gorleston and Harleston.

This particular stone apparently carries a curse that anyone who would dare to move it will die. In fact it was moved a few yards several years ago when the road was straightened and one of the workmen died suddenly. So if you do visit please walk past it carefully!

The stone itself is at coordinates 52.29.866N 1.30.892E. This is at the side of the busy A146 but there is a handy lay-by in the immediate area so it’s relatively safe.

The cache is sited at the main coordinate given at the top of the page about 200 yards away via an easy walk. If going at an appropriate time of year take a container for blackberries - these grow in profusion along the bridle path.

The cache is a sandwich box containing the usual cache bits and bobs.
