SJG's (Jersey) Devil of a Get-Together Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

Evil Chicken: This was a great cache event - thanks to all the wonderful So. Jersey cachers and newbies that came out and made it such a success!! Just hanging out with "youse guyz" was the real event!

As promised, some real "piney" caching took place, complete with swamp-hopping, unusual sights & spooky tales! The arms dealer from Delaware and the gun runner from So. Jersey kept the kids well stocked with marshmallow guns and ammo!

Hope to see you all at our next event in November - "Brr...It's 'Chili' in November"!

Geocache Description:

"It is a haunted place where the blood red waters of the Mullica River rise in the bog of a New Jersey town....The cedars that line the river banks stain the waters their deep color. Stunted pitch pines stand motionless, their shallow roots anchored precariously in gleaming white stands. Silence reigns."

So writes Helena Mann-Malnitchenko in her autobiographic memoir, A Haunted Place, an eloquent sketch of the Pine Barrens.

We are getting together on Saturday, October 23rd at Noon to seek out signs of the Jersey Devil while caching in his backyard.  We will be beginning our trek at the Mt. Pleasant-Batsto Church (in continuous service since 1808) and hiking from there to enjoy the rare beauty of the Pine Barrens and grab some caches along the way.  We will be hiking at a leisurely pace, allowing for plenty of great conversation and photos.  This is a fun opportunity for new cachers and muggles to meet some other SJ cachers and learn a few tricks and tips of piney caching and stashing!

Along our route, keep a sharp eye out for unusual tracks, listen for odd sounds and be aware for the feeling that you are being watched – you might just be!

We will break for a late lunch at the picnic grove in Batsto (grills will be available, but everyone is responsible to provide their own lunch!)  Depending on the weather, a thermos of coffee, hot chocolate or hot tea may not be a bad idea, either.

If you are still feeling brave as the sun sets, join us for a little story-telling session…and a possible night cache!

If you stay for the weekend, camping, canoeing and kayak rental is available nearby.  You can check this link for details.  There are over 50 caches in Wharton SF alone and Sunday, at noon, Batsto Village is hosting its annual Halloween party for the kids.

The legend begins in 1735 when a Mrs. Leeds of Smithville was pregnant. This was to be her thirteenth child, and Mrs. Leeds was feeling old before her time. As her labor began one stormy night, she cursed the unborn baby during a fit of painful contractions, saying, "Let this child be a devil!"

Mrs. Leeds soon forgot her curse when a beautiful baby boy was placed in her arms by the midwife. Suddenly the baby's body started to mutate, and Mrs. Leeds watched in horror as the baby's face elongated to resemble a bat or horse, and long, dark wings sprouted from his shoulder blades. His legs grew long and thin and his pudgy feet hardened and formed into hoof-like extremities. Fear gripped all in the room as long claws grew from the baby's fingertips and his blue eyes yellowed. The creature before them now showed no resemblance to the baby it had been just moments before its transformation. The beast let out an ear-piercing scream and then turned, burst through the roof of the cabin and flew off into the night..

“It is quite common that, in hunting cases, the "hunters" become the "hunted"... this may be another case. Some strange, unexplainable things have been happening to us recently, and quite honestly they have completely spooked us all…For instance, we had just brought up the idea that, oddly enough, within the past month we have had sightings in the proximity of every Devil Hunter's house. The next thing we know, strange things happened and the rest of the night became a hunt...After these recent incidents, our minds have been churning like crazy. Perhaps this creature is more than what we give it credit for. Perhaps it is very intelligent, or has an excellent sense of smell. Perhaps it is chasing us. Maybe we have become the Devil Hunted..."
