Based in Dallas since the 1930s Braniff Airways was an inovator in commercial air travel. The building they used at Elm & Field served primarily as a customer service center for business travelers in downtown Dallas. Eleven floors of parking, along with a shuttle to Love Field allowed anyone with a ticket on Braniff to leave their car until they returned to Dallas. This building's use became rather sparadic through Braniff Airway's bankrupcy and subsequent closure in the mid 1980s. The garage is now a by-the-hour parking garage, (above what is now Subway).
At some point in the early '80s, the skaters in and around Dallas realized that the Braniff Garage was had potential beyond parking. The floors ran in a one-way fashion; even floors went up while odd foors went down. This allowed skaters to go from the roof to the third floor without having to worry about running head-on into an oncoming vehicle. At the end of the third floor was a tight spiral driveway that was un-navicable on a skateboard traveling at 20+ miles an hour. Craig Johnson, a Dallas pro, tried it once. He hit the curb, which sent him through the air, plowing into the wall and tumbling several more yards before coming to rest in a heap. Luckily he wasn't seriously hurt.
On weekends and at night, (especially if it was raining), it was a safe bet that there would at least be a few others there, looking to race. Nobody gambled, it was just for the fun of going fast and maybe faster than then next guy.
For years, the story was pretty much the same:
We skate.
Security guard shows up and tries to catch us in his car. A futile effort since a skateboard can corner far-and-away better than a car without slowing down.
We ride to the third floor and hit the stairwell down to the street.
Security guard catches up with us several blocks away and takes our names.
We return the next night or weekend to do it all over again.
Eventually, the security guards got smart and when they realized we were in there, they just turned off the elevators. "Whoa! I'm not walkin' eleven flights of stairs." "Me neither, let's go skate <insert skate spot here>."
A mini mint tin about a half a block from the garage. Very near parking meters. Beware of muggles. BYOP.
Due to the surrounding buildings, you'll probably need to use the hint in order to make the find.
