An easy cache between Camp Verde and the top of the Rim.
This cache is hidden near (but not too near) the “Crook Trail”. The Crook Trail is named after General George Crook, the Commander of the Military Department of Arizona in 1871, who was in charge of subduing the Apache Indians and confining them to reservations. General Crook, who was known as "Gray Wolf" by the Apaches, rode mules along the trail as they were more sure-footed than horses.
He was most renownd as an Indian fighter as he led many campaigns against Indians in the Northwest, Northern Plains and the Apaches in Arizona. His greatest accomplishments however, were the treaties he negotiated with various tribes throughout the west. In most of his efforts, Crook was opposed by many Arizona citizens who wanted the Apaches exterminated. He is buried with his wife, in Arlington National Cemetery. Crook Walk in Arlington Cemetery is named for him as is this trail. Team Badnav placed this cache because there are no others in this area where we often camp with our family.
The trail was first traveled in 1871 and improved to a road for wagon use in 1874. At one time it was the principal supply route from Fort Whipple in Prescott, through Camp Verde and on to Camp Apache, southeast of what is now Show Low in the White Mountains. The actual trail/road is on the north east side of the highway. I put the cache here because there is an easy place to get off the highway and park your car.
Watch the movie "Geronimo: An American Legend" for a great portrayal of General Crook by Gene Hackman. I commend past cachers as the area is very clean and you can hardly tell anyone has been there. Thanks to all.
