This cache is located near the summit of Peach Mountain in
Stinchfield Woods. Since the third member of Team HamSamwich is our
dog, we thought a cache with astronomical reference to Sirius the
Dog Star was appropriate for a cache with a view of the University
of Michigan Radio Telescope.
PLEASE NOTE: When you approach this cache you will be very
close to the radio telescope receiving dish. PLEASE TURN OFF YOUR
CELL PHONES while searching for this cache as they interfere
severely with the telescope's reception, and the research being
conducted.
The public is welcome here on U-M land (for more information see
the School of Natural Resources Stinchfield Woods Web Page)
Rules for public access are:
- No parking in front of the access gate.
- Public use hours are from dawn to dusk only.
- No vehicles or bicycles are permitted on the site except those
for approved research and teaching use.
- Dogs with owners are welcome to visit, but they must be on a
leash (the dog, not necessarily the owner).
- No cutting or collecting of plant material; no hunting or
harming vertebrates.
There is no parking along either Stinchfield Woods Rd. or Toma
Rd., and parking is limited. While access can be gained from
Stinchfield Woods Rd., the area there is limited to about two cars-
do not block the gate. We suggest parking at a slightly larger area
located on state land off Toma Rd (coordinates: N42 24.249, W083
56.542) with space for about three cars. The trailhead access is
about 100' south of the parking area on the east side of Toma
Rd.
The cache is situated close to an established trail, and there
will be no need to bushwhack to reach it. Since there are many
trails in this area, just follow the trail which seems to be in the
direction of the cache and you will find it. When you arrive at the
spectacular view of the backside of the radio telescope receiving
dish, you are near the cache.
The cache has items of interest to everyone, with some cool dog
toys for those who cache with their own Dog Star.
