Overshadowed by the huge
neighbouring forests of Tollymore and Donard, this little gem
of a park is an oasis in the ever-encroaching suburban sprawl
of Newcastle. (The area is shown center-left in the photo
below.)
The setting: A short walk along part of the Ulster Way,
which continues from here to the Hares Gap, and up into the
mountains. Paths and bridges in this public wood have been upgraded
with assistance from the NI Peace & Reconciliation Fund.
Parking is allowed in the adjacent residential street Riverside
Park off the main road, but please take care not to obstruct any
entrances.
The cache: This cache was placed as part of the "Sweep
down to the Sea" event, in November 2004.
The best approach is to stay on the Mourne Way path until you are
within 60 metres of the main cache site. "Following the arrow" is
possible, but will not save any time in the long run! Do not cross
onto any agricultural land adjoining the wood.
The hint on this page refers to the intermediate cache, which is a
small(7x4cm) tab-lock box. It contains cards with the final cache
co-ordinates and a search clue. Take a card and rehide the box
quickly, as the area can be busy.
The final cache is a large tab-lock box, with log book and swap
items.
The cache hiding place is camouflaged, and the box wrapped in dark
green material. Please replace all this when re-hiding the
container. - Tx.
